Anybody else sick of this cold weather? Well you are in luck, Spring is just around the corner. But until then, it’s still feels like winter in New York City. I suggest getting in some final winter activities while the temps are still low.. Our family fav–outdoor ice skating!!
My daughter and I moved to New York City from Texas–to be with my now fiance–over two years ago. She began taking figure skating classes soon after and the sport quickly became a family activity for us, especially during the winter time! Although I work a 40 hour week (leaving only two days for family activities) this sport has been something we can bond over on my days off And D (my daughter) has gotten so good, I now take her before school once a week for a private lesson! (I know, how do we both have the energy??)
We now look forward to winter every year to go outdoor ice skating. Our favorite outdoor rink is at Bryant Park which is open from October to March. You can get in for free if you have your own skates! (Pro tip: Bring a lock to put you stuff in a locker, they charge to hold you items because you are not allowed to bring anything onto the ice and they will confiscate any items left lying outside of a locker) I took the video below on our last visit in February.
I think outdoor skating really celebrates winter and serves as a great bonding activity with children. You get to help teach your children an activity they can use for the rest of their life.. and bonus most of these outdoor rinks are in the heart of Manhattan. These are memories I am sure you and they will cherish.
Unfortunately Bryant Park just closed shop for the season. You missed out on a great Winter Village they have there, lots of great places to eat and also a fun place to buy Christmas gifts!
You are in luck! There are other rinks still open! Central Park has not one, but two that are still open for business!
Wollman Rink is located in the southern portion of the park near Times Square. Really great scenery with all the trees and woods feel while buildings tower in the background. This rink is much more crowded because it is so close to so many tourist attractions. According to their website they are open until April 7, 2019 so lots of time to get out and skate! On weekends entry fee is $19 for adults and $6 for children. If you don’t have skates, rental fee is $10 a pair.
We really like Lasker Rink located in the northern part of Central Park near Harlem. This rink is less crowded and bonus… they charge less! $9 for adults, $5 for kids and skate rental is as additional $10. You still get the same woodsy feel in the middle of the city and there is a subway stop nearby making it pretty accessible.
They also sell some great hot cocoa!! This rink is open until March 17th, 2019.
We are trying to get one more outdoor ice skating session in before the season is over so check in with my Facebook over the next two weeks and make sure to follow me on Insta: @nyc_workingmom and on Facebook for updates!
